Peace Quotes
“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then they become your partner.”
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
Background
Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa as Rolihlahla Mandela. He emerged as a global symbol of peace and reconciliation through his unwavering fight against apartheid and his dedication to human rights. As a leader of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1961, he had advocated for sabotaging government installations to oppose systemic racial segregation.
Nelson’s activism led to his arrest and the historic Rivonia Trial, where he delivered his poignant “I Am Prepared to Die” speech, articulating his vision for a democratic South Africa. His 27-year imprisonment transformed him into a powerful symbol of resistance against apartheid. Released in 1990 amid escalating domestic and international pressure, he played a pivotal role in negotiating the end of apartheid alongside President F.W. de Klerk. Their collaborative efforts culminated in South Africa’s first multiracial elections in 1994, leading to Nelson’s election as the nation’s first Black president.
In recognition of their joint efforts to dismantle apartheid peacefully, Nelson and President F.W. de Kler were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. During his presidency from 1994 to 1999, Nelson championed national reconciliation, establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses and promote healing. He also focused on combating poverty and expanding healthcare services, laying the foundation for a more equitable society.
Nelson Mandela’s legacy continues to inspire global movements for peace and justice, exemplified by the United Nations’ declaration of the Nelson Mandela Decade of Peace from 2019 to 2028, honoring his contributions to humanity. Nelson’s life exemplifies the profound impact of steadfast commitment to justice, equality, and reconciliation in fostering global peace. Something the world needs badly with present conflicts.
